As we approach summer this year, for the first time ever I have been making watermelon juice at home with my Greenstar juicer. I love the juicer and I have been enjoying it for a handful of years now, but I have never used it with a sole ingredient with the exception of oranges.
One mini watermelon yields me roughly three servings, so I usually drink the equivalent of two servings immediately after juicing because it’s so refreshing I can’t help myself, and I put the rest in a mason jar and refrigerate for the morning. I have not been including the rind in my Greenstar juicer, although I have read that the rind is rich in chlorophyll and amino acid citrulline. So I will try including it next time.
Not only is the pure watermelon juice appealing to the eye, it’s also delicious and super hydrating. I’ve been using miniature watermelons that have been available recently at Whole Foods Market on Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans.
The watermelon is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family which includes cantaloupe, pumpkin and other plants that grow on vines on the ground.
This famous fruit is an excellent source of essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and smaller amounts of copper, iron and zinc.
Watermelon’s color is produced by high lycopene content, the red carotenoid that produces the red color. Lycopene is an important anti-oxidant that is effective in neutralizing harmful free radicals in our body.
Watermelon is abundant in electrolytes, replacing electrolytes lost during a good workout. This allows it to aid in the reduction of muscle soreness and help eliminate muscle cramps. Electrolytes carry other benefits as well, helping the body regulate water retention, pH balance of your blood (acidity), and muscle function among other processes.
In short, watermelon is very cleansing, alkalizing, diuretic and mineralizing. It is very efficient in promoting intestinal elimination, keeping the body free of toxic wastes.
Its juice digests easily and are completely assimilated by the body for all its minerals, providing necessary nutrients to the body.
The alkalizing effect maintains the acid-alkaline balance in the body, neutralizing this toxic condition caused by excessive intake of acid-forming foods.
Drawing from the rich antioxidant and beta-carotene, the health effects of watermelon juice are immense.
Be careful to wash your watermelons before cutting into them as they from in the ground and neglecting to do so can result int food contamination.
The Greenstar juicer is a twin gear juicer, which produces a much higher quality end product by “pressing” the produce between the gears, as opposed to “cutting” like a centrifugal juicer. While the Greenstar juicer costs more, mine has lasted many years and they come with a five year warranty. I was burning through one $100 juicer per year prior, and I have had my Greenstar juicer for more than five years so in the end you will come out ahead. And with better juice!
If you are interested in juicing at home, be sure to check back as I am sure at some point I will post more articles celebrating my Greenstar juicer.
